Re: Joey Beauchamp
Its true that men are less likely to ask for help.
Needs to be more funding for community groups like Mens Sheds where men get together and interact & get out of their isolation by 'accident'.

You're right. Suicides particularly men in this age bracket are very high. I'm a Samaritan and get loads of calls. You never really know if you make a difference but it's clear that just picking up the phone and talking rarely makes things worse. Give it a go because death is forever.

Sad news, I remember this episode well, crazy that it was 28 years ago now. The West Ham circus was in full swing during this period!

"But being a bloke you are at the bottom of the welfare stakes."

Mainly because blokes don't like asking for help.

Can't see a way around people needing help and not asking for it, without pestering people who don't ask for it because they don't need it.

Also, mods, can you add an RIP to the title of this thread please? I think that a lot more posters would read it.

Obviously you can just delete this post.

Re: Joey Beauchamp
One Iron, it's probably a much much, much higher number than that even.

At my sister's funeral I was talking to the vicar and he said that one day he was outside the crem and was talking to an East End undertaker who worked for Cribbs.

The undertaker said that 20 years ago if a male between 18 and 55 died they would ask the cause of death before going to collect the body.

Now they don't even bother to ask as they already know that it's a suicide., Derek (the vicar) said that he started looking into it and in his words there is a 'catastropic epidemic of otherwise normal white men committing suicide that is simply being pushed under the table'.

I remember us all taking the piss when he left because he was homesick and missed his girlfriend. Understandable really because who of us wouldn't give a right bollock to play for West Ham?

RIP Joey. I can only imagine what his friends and family are going through now.

Yes, that’s the game. Can’t say I remember the incident with Harry putting on a bloke from the crowd but then Harry always had a way with words!
Beauchamp looked good that day. At the end of the game we could just walk on the pitch so I pushed my programme towards him and he signed it. He didn’t seem, even then, to be very happy to be wearing the claret and blue.

Re: Joey Beauchamp
You scouted him? Are you a scout then?

Athletico Easthamico 2:11 Mon Feb 21
Re: Joey Beauchamp
When we were linked with him I scouted him at a Charlton v Oxford game at Upton Park.

He looked a cracking player, easily the best player on the pitch.
Played like Jared Bowen but more skilful and with a better shot.

Strange how we pursued him when it was obvious he didn't want to join.

Knew he had troubles after he retired and he must have had them while playing also.

Not surprised how it ended really. Terrible shame.

But being a bloke you are at the bottom of the welfare stakes.

Was that the game when 'Arry brought on a bloke in the crowd as he was sledging Chapman? There's a great video about that on YouTube somewhere.

Re: Joey Beauchamp
He didn't want to leave Oxford but they needed the cash to balance the books. He was very reluctant to leave but he did it for his home town club. I remember him speaking on "West Ham" club call (remember that?), and he said he was taken aback on the distance to travel the West Ham training ground. His voice was very fragile /neo stammering.

Very sad news. He clearly had issues that amounted to more than being homesick when signing for us.

RIP Joey

Re: Joey Beauchamp
You'd hope these days clubs would do more work on the mental state of players & their motivation & enthusiasm to join you.
Whenever I hear of potential transfers when it feels like we are having to convince someone to join us I think of him and in most cases think we should forget it.

Obviously was a fragile guy off the pitch and had problems after football.

Re: Joey Beauchamp
I saw him play in the pre season game at Oxford United where he looked promising. He certainly gave Harry plenty of content for his after dinner routines with the homesickness stories etc. RIP
